TOBACCO FESTIVAL 2009
The country’s biggest producer of Virginia tobacco is again putting its top product on the spotlight in line with its celebration of 111th founding anniversary and 8th cityhood celebration.
Candon City named its week long festivities ( march 23- 30) after its Virginia tobacco in recognition to main agricultural product which remains the premiere cash crop in the city.
“Its annual full promotion of our city, native products and tourist spots and also lure investors,” Candon City Mayor Allen Singson said.
This year’s fiesta theme is Candon: Puso ken Rimat ti Kailokuan (the heart and radiance of Ilocandia) Among the highlights of the week long affair is the Tobacco Street dancing and grand parade.
Eight secondary and tertiary schools in the city compete for top honors in the street dancing competition with tobacco motif. A search for Miss Virginia Tobacco and the media favorite panagdubla ( tobacco rolling) contest.
Among the most anticipated is Mr. and Ms Ilocandia Bikini Open 2009 where 16 candidates each will be vying for the crown.
The festivities is full of sports competitions that includes the Mayor Allen Singson Cup ( Candon City Chess Championship), Soccer, 10-K run, mountain bike, motocross, boxing, taekwondo, billiards, beach volleyball and boxing.
Other high anticipated events are Miss Gay Ilocandia, SK night, Ballet Recital and marching band competition.
Helping the city mayor in hosting the throngs of expected tourists, national dignitaries and participants are Deputy Speaker Eric Singson and his wife, former congresswoman Grace Singson.
This year’s administration/ barangay/ balikbayan night will be highlighted by the ballroom dancing presentations of the different barangay officials and their spouses, women’s group, teachers and students.
The highly acclaimed Philharmonic Orchestra will also be performing this year inside the Roman Catholic Church. This year’s fiesta committee led by its chair City Councilor George Valdez had been working hard to ensure every activity will go on schedule.
Candon produced an average of three million kilos of Virginia tobacco in nearly one thousand hectares land area. The city also well known for its two top products, calamay (glutinous rice cake) and kornik.
Candon baked the world’s biggest rice cake in 2006 churning out 2,547 kilos of calamay, besting the 2, 097 kilos baked in Niigata, Japan in 2002.
The Calamay makers from barangay Bagar used 200 gantas of glutinous rice, milk of 2, 000 coconuts, and 1, 200 kilos of brown and white sugar and utilized 132 vats.
Calamay is the city’s choice as its One Town One Product entry. Candon’s kornik is the crunchiest and tastiest in the country.
Candon is the center of commerce and trade and the education capital of the second district of Ilocos Sur.
It is 347 kilometers north of Manila and 63 kilometers south of Vigan City. TO
